How to Book Your Practical Driving Test

Drive with Radu

Booking your driving test is an important step towards getting your full driving licence.

This guide explains how to book your test correctly and what you MUST know before booking.

Step 1 Make Sure You Are Ready

Before booking your driving test you MUST:

  • Have a valid UK provisional driving licence

  • Have passed your theory test

  • Speak with your instructor first

  • Make sure your instructor agrees you are test ready

You MUST NOT book your test without discussing it with your instructor.

Step 2 Use The Official DVSA Website

You MUST only use the official DVSA booking website:

https://www.gov.uk/book-driving-test

You MUST NOT use unofficial websites that charge extra fees.

Step 3 Book Your Driving Test

When booking your test you will need:

  • Your provisional driving licence number

  • Your theory test pass certificate number

  • A debit or credit card for payment

Follow the booking steps carefully:

1 Enter your details
2 Choose your test centre
3 Choose your date and time
4 Confirm your booking
5 Check your confirmation email

You MUST check all details before confirming your booking.

Step 4 Instructor Availability And PRN

Before booking you MUST check your instructor availability.

The DVSA may ask for your instructor PRN number during the booking process.

The PRN helps confirm instructor availability and helps prevent multiple learners being booked at the same time.

You MUST NOT use an instructor PRN without permission.

Step 5 Choose The Correct Test Centre

You MUST only choose a test centre agreed with your instructor.

This helps make sure you are properly prepared for the roads and driving conditions in that area.

You MUST NOT book a different test centre without agreement first.

Important DVSA Booking Changes

DVSA introduced new booking rules during 2026 to reduce misuse of the booking system and improve test availability for learners.

From 31 March 2026

Learners can now only make 2 changes to a driving test booking.

This includes:

  • Changing the date

  • Changing the time

  • Changing the test centre

  • Swapping tests with another learner

From 12 May 2026

Only the learner driver can:

  • Book a driving test

  • Change a driving test

  • Cancel a driving test

  • Swap a driving test

Driving instructors can no longer manage bookings for learners.

Learners MUST control and manage their own booking.

From June 2026

DVSA introduced further restrictions on changing test centres to help improve local test availability.

You SHOULD always check the official GOV website for the latest updates.

After You Book

Once your test is booked you MUST:

  • Send your booking confirmation to your instructor

  • Keep your booking reference safe

  • Check your test details carefully

If you need to change your test you MUST speak with your instructor first.
